Retired attorney Mr. Dennis O’Meara, Mrs. Zeiss’s father, was a guest speaker in the seventh-grade English classes on Tuesday, Jan. 29th in preparation for their mock trial.
A graduate of USC and Southwestern Law School, Mr. O’Meara began his forty-one career with Allstate Insurance Company in August 1972 and retired on January 31, 2013. He started out as a Pleading and Discovery Attorney, promoted to an Intermediate Trial Attorney, and served as a Senior Trial Attorney for some twenty-five years. Over the course of his career, he tried over three hundred jury trials and thousands of arbitrations, mediations, depositions, and non-jury court trials.
Mr. O’Meara spoke to the students about the principles of evidence, the trial process, elements of proof, and general courtroom procedures. The students are conducting a mock trial in response to S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders on Friday, Feb. 1st. They learned a lot!
