HPA Girl Scout Book Drive

By Susan Clark, High Point Parent

Hi everyone,

We wanted to share some photos and highlights of the Book Drive work day this past Saturday.

We arrived at 8:30am and after unloading 2930 books (!!!), we rolled up our sleeves and got to work. We stamped and sorted our donated books according to grade level to be placed into classroom libraries. Then we assisted in labeling 1500 new hardbound books to refresh their library. Girls were given the opportunity to paint murals in the library. It was an intense and full morning, but we loved knowing that the children at Figueroa Street Elementary School were able to receive thousands of books to encourage the joy of reading.

We learned that schools apply to be part of the Access Books program and once selected, partners with the organization to coordinate the work day. Librarians are on staff at Access Books to curate book lists that would make for an updated school library catalog. The 1500 books that are purchased for the school are negotiated in bulk pricing with orders made for 9 schools at a time.

We met the hardworking Principal and Vice Principal, as well as staff and additional volunteers from Access Books. They provided us a lovely breakfast and worked with us to help transport books to classrooms and the library. We had a wonderful time working together.

Thank you so much for all of your support and for helping collect books at carline! Thank you for allowing us to plaster the campus and pass out flyers! Thank you for the opportunity for the girls to make morning announcements and have a turn at public speaking!

We could not have done this without the encouragement and support of our High Point Community!

Thanks again!
Susan
