Bake Sale for People’s Fund of Maui

On Friday, September 28, High Point students at carline all lined up for a very sweet event: a bake sale hosted by the Eighth Grade to raise money for the victims of the Maui fires.

The idea of the bake sale first came to Cassidy I., an eighth grader who had heard about the fires in August. In an interview, she shared that her uncle had made a Facebook post about the fires, and it reminded her that her great-great grandparents grew up in Maui. S he wanted to help in some way, and the idea of a bake sale came to her. She brought up the idea to Amelia K. and William G. two fellow eighth graders, and they were happy to help. Amelia already had some experience with raising money for causes, as she hosted a penny drive for the fires in Australia, encouraging people to donate spare change in order to help in the restoration of places that were damaged or burned. Cassidy shared that there was no exact goal for money to be raised, that she just wanted people participating and pitching in, and that anything helps, as it’s all for a good cause.  All the proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to the People’s Fund of Maui, an organization started by Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson in the wake of the fires that  gives money directly to the people in Maui who have been affected.

The majority of the eighth grade chipped in for the event, baking pumpkin loaf, rice crispy treats, brownies, and multiple types of cookies. They sold out of almost everything, and the remaining treats were purchased to go to the faculty and family members. In total, $1,050 was raised, an incredible amount that will surely help the people of Maui.
